Which register models replaced the SAM4s ER-5200M

There are some other great registers to replace the ER-5200M

Are you familiar with the "saying absence makes the heart grow fonder"? Who knew the 5200M was such a popular machine? We have sold this model cash register for a decade even though feature wise it was dated well before it was discontinued. Despite the shortcoming of features it's popularity was propelled by the robust design and construction. I was always baffled that end-users continued to select the 5200M when other models had some great features this machine was missing. You already know the bad news, the ER-5200M has not been made for a few years. The good new is that there are several excellent replacements

OK, maybe SAM4s overlooked one major feature when they recreated the 5200M in the 900 series. The direct replacement which is the ER-940 has a slightly smaller keyboard. Just like you we wish they would have gone with the same keyboard size, especially since they were still using it in the SPS-500 line up. That aside I think the features they added offset the keyboard. The number one feature added was a SD card port. The one major glaring issue of the 5200M was it could not easily be cloned without the use of a PC. With the 900 and 300 series that issue has been resolved. I would think this alone would be enough to justify a keyboard that is ten buttons or so smaller. 

The path forward is the ER-940 or SPS-340 Models from SAM4s

As great a machine as it was the replacement models have some great features. We suggest looking at both the ER-940 which is the direct replacement or the upgraded model the SPS-340 which features an eight line display. We don't often have used cash registers any longer but we came across a few SER-7000 units in pretty good shape. Since this was such a great register when it was a current model and people are still using it we picked them up.

If you use this model cash register this could be a great investment for you.

We don't recommend this register if you are just starting your business. On the other hand if this is a model you have been using for years it makes great sense to pick up one or two working used registers.   They are in pretty good shape because they were only used seasonally. Can the SAM4s SPS-345 replace the SPS-520RT for Convenience Stores?

For many years now the SAM4s SPS-520RT was the go to register for the convenience store market. That all changed of course last year when all of the SPS-500 series registers were discontinued and replaced with the SAP-630R Android cash register. Without a doubt the new offering does fill the vacuum left behind with the demise of the SPS-500 series. The rub is the cost, which is much higher than the old standard. So you do have choices, you can spend more for the updated version or take a step back with a lower model the SPS-345. Will it work for you? Lets look at the pros and cons. We are seeing a slight uptick in SPS-345 sales in the absence of the 500 series.

The SPS-345 Cash Register was always in the shadow of the popular 500 series. Can it step in and fill the void? Well it comes pretty close and for some users close enough. Here are the pros to going with a SPS-345 for your scanning system.

• 21 button keyboard
• Mix and match pricing
• Bottle Deposit
• EBT/Food Stamp Function
• Supports many popular bar code scanners

So as you can see the SPS-345 checks off a lot of boxes many stores are looking for. What are the cons you are now asking. Well to be honest there are not many but they can be big depending on how you plan to use the register. Here are some highlights as I think about the weaknesses of this register. 

• No Alpha overlay for standard keyboard. SPS-500 has alpha touch screen for product description so much easier to name the products. 
• No Ethernet port, which may or not be an issue for you. As an example you could not program this register via the internet without the use of a serial to IP adapter.
• No Touch Screen 

Those are the most glaring features the 345 is missing. I'm sure there are a few more but likewise probably a few more pros I have overlooked too. Bottom line is this machine will work for the majority of local markets and corner stores. Keep in mind it also is affordable at about $750 plus a scanner. So account for cost and it is a real bargain.
